Teaching is an act to disperse knowledge and provides schooling for others. Teaching is a profession that requires patience. In other words, a teacher must be able to control their emotions and have a great deal of patience when dealing with different behaviour situations with students and learners. The role of a teacher is considered formal and in most countries, an individual must obtain professional qualifications set by the government to become a teacher in state-funded schools.
For instance, in Malaysia individuals must at least pursue tertiary education to teach in secondary schools. Meanwhile, for those who aim to teach in college or university, they must at least possess a degree. Teachers play an important role in shaping the future of the students. Therefore, teachers must impart knowledge and skill effectively through instruction or by setting good example to the students.
Besides teaching, an educator must also perform other duties and responsibilities such as to facilitate in staff development and training, supervise and promote well-being of pupils, as well as to assess and report pupils’ performance. A teacher may teach science, art, religion, numeracy, literacy, civics, life skill and craftsmanship.
Some may ask, ‘What are the qualities that make a good teacher?’ It is rather hard to define but basically, parents, principals and students list down several characteristics of a good teacher – creative, have a sense of humour, inspirational, compassionate, philosophical, open to change, calm and willing to learn. Everyone makes mistakes and that includes teachers. Thus, teacher must be willing to learn from others to expand your knowledge in certain areas.
